Bentley Defeats Army 4-2 to Earn Series Split

West Point, N.Y.- Four different goal scorers were backed up by 21 saves from senior goalie Aidan Pelino (Oakville, Ontario) as Bentley defeated Army West Point 4-2 on Saturday night to earn a series split.

Bentley led 3-1 after two periods after sophomore defenseman Luke Orysiuk (Edmonton, Alberta) and freshman Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) scored in the 2nd period. Army got to within 3-2 on a power play goal early in the 3rd period, but Falcons sophomore forward Brendan Walkom (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a big goal at the 11:02 mark of the 3rd period to give Bentley a two goal lead at 4-2 which they held on to the rest of the way.

The Falcons improved to 7-9 overall and 5-8 in Atlantic Hockey with the win, which snapped a four game winning streak for the Black Knights.

The teams traded goals in the 1st period, with Army getting a power play goal from Colin Bilek at the 10:28 mark. The goal was answered though by junior center Brendan Hamblet (Hopkinton, Mass.) at the 15:36 mark, his 2nd goal of the weekend and 6th of the season, to tie the game 1-1 which is how the period ended.

The Falcons then struck two goals in the 2nd period off the sticks of Orysiuk and Gosiewski, which came just 1:36 apart in the middle of the period.

Orysiuk's goal came off a great individual effort that started in the defensive zone. He skated into the offensive zone and had a first shot saved by Army goalie Trevin Kozlowski. He got the rebound and backhanded a shot that was sticked away by Kozlowski, then dug the rebound out of the corner and skated into the slot, only to have his shot blocked. Orysiuk stuck with it though and finally wristed a shot past Kozlowski for the goal to give Bentley a 2-1 lead at 10:09.

At the 11:44 mark Gosiewski made it 3-1 for Bentley with his 6th goal of the season. Gosiewski took a cross-ice pass from Ryner Gorowsky (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and fired a shot from the right face-off circle that got through traffic in front of the net and past Kozlowski for the goal.

Bentley took that 3-1 lead into the 3rd period, but saw it cut to 3-2 when defenseman Anthony Firriolo scored a power play goal for Army at 2:11.

Just past the midway point of the period though, Walkom scored his 2nd goal of the weekend to restore Bentley's two goal lead to 4-2. Freshman Lucas Vanroboys (Thamesville, Ontario) helped set the goal up with a shot from the blue line that Kozlowski saved. Will Schlagenhauf (Carmel, Indiana) got a touch on the rebound in front of the net and over to Walkom, who then roofed a shot past Kozlowski for the goal.

Bentley then saw out the final 2:49 of the 3rd period with Kozlowski out and an extra-attacker on for Army to seal the win.

Pelino made six saves in each of the first two periods and nine saves in the 3rd period to earn the win.

Bentley will now close out the first half of the season on Thursday when they visit Dartmouth.
