Seven Freshmen Set to Debut for Bentley in 2019-20 Season

 

The Bentley University hockey team will welcome in seven student-athletes in its incoming freshman class for the 2019-20 season. The group consists of three forwards, three defensemen and one goalie.

Among the seven players, four played last season in the North American Hockey League, and three suited up in the British Columbia Hockey League.

The class is broken down by goaltender Jason Grande (Amarillo-NAHL). The forwards are Matt Gosiewski (Wenatchee-BCHL), Lucas Vanroboys (Prince George-BCHL) and Joe Winkelmann (Odessa-NAHL). The defensemen are Carter Dwyer and Hunter Toale, both from Johnstown in the NAHL and Marcus Walter (Alberni Valley-BCHL).

Carter Dwyer: (D, Johnstown, NAHL): Dwyer played two seasons with Johnston in the NAHL. In the 2018-19 campaign, the 6-2 defenseman combined for 4 goals and 10 assists in 45 regular and postseason games. Played a key role as the team led the NAHL with 47 regular season wins and reached the league semifinals. Suited up in 35 games during the 2017-18 season with Johnstown.

Matt Gosiewski: (F, Wenatchee, BCHL): Gosiewski was one of the leading scorers in the BCHL last season with 51 points in 50 regular season games. He was 12th in the league in goals scored with 28, to go along with 23 assists during the regular season. Led the Wild to the BCHL semifinals and had 11 points in the postseason. Gosiewski previously played two seasons in the USHL, and also suited up for Penticton in the BCHL during his juniors career.

Jason Grande (G, Amarillo, NAHL): Grande played in 80 games over two seasons with Amarillo in the NAHL. Last season he posted the 5th best GAA in the league at 2.07, and had an impressive record of 24-7. In the league playoffs he won five games to help the Bulls reach the NAHL semifinals. In 2017-18, he played in 45 games and led the league in minutes played.

Hunter Toale: (D, Johnstown, NAHL): Along with his Johnstown teammate and now classmate at Bentley, Carter Dwyer, the two helped lead the way as the Tomahawks led the NAHL in regular wins and reached the league semifinals. In his only season of juniors, the 6-1 Toale combined for 6 goals and 37 assists in 70 regular and postseason games. His 34 points in the regular season was among the highest for a defenseman in the league.

Lucas Vanroboys (F, Prince George, BCHL): Vanroboys helped Prince George win the 2019 BCHL championship, and totaled 7 goals and 10 assists in 32 regular and postseason games. He began the season with Cowichan in the BCHL, and tallied 7 goals and 8 assists in 27 games. Vanroboys played the 2017-18 season with Nanaimo in the BCHL and had 14 goals and 10 assists.

Marcus Walter: (D, Alberni Valley, BCHL): Walter played last season with Alberni Valley in the BCHL and was a team captain. A 6-3, 200 pound defenseman, Walter had 16 points on 3 goals and 13 assists in 51 games and helped the Bulldogs reach the league playoffs. He previously played with Springfield in the NAHL and Drayton Valley in the AJHL during his juniors career.

Joe Winkelmann: (F, Odessa, NAHL): The youngest member of Bentley's incoming class, Winkelmann split last season between Odessa and Austin in the NAHL. He put up big numbers in his first and only season of junior hockey. The St. Louis native combined for 18 goals and 35 assists for 53 points in 58 total games.
