Waltham, Mass. – A late Bentley goal by senior Drew Callin (Middleton, Wisc.) wasn't enough as Sacred Heart held on for a 3-2 victory over the Falcons at Bentley Arena on Friday night.
With Bentley trailing 3-1 in the final minutes and an extra attacker on the ice, Callin scored after he tipped in a shot from the point by defenseman Charlie Marchand (Calgary, Alberta) with 1:00 remaining to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Bentley kept the pressure on after the goal and freshman Jakov Novak (Windsor, Ontario) had a good look on net in the final seconds, but his shot was saved by goalie Brett Magnus.
Earlier in the night, Bentley jumped out to a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the game, just 1:16 in. Will Garin (Mound, Minnesota) led a break out of the neutral zone and a pass to Dylan Pitera (Culver, Ind.) created a two on one in the offensive zone. Pitera hit Santerno with a centering pass right on time for Santerno to shoot past Magnus to give Bentley the early 1-0 lead.
Sacred Heart though jumped out to a 2-1 lead with two goals in the opening 4:28 of the 2nd period. Junior Jason Cotton scored at the 0:52 mark on the power play with a shot in the right face-off circle that got through traffic to tie the score.
Freshman Ryan Steele jumped on a rebound in front of the net off a saved shot by Aidan Pelino (Oakville, Ontario) from Mel Melconian to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
Later in the period, Pelino kept it a one goal game with a point blank save on Mike Crocock with 3:30 remaining.
Sacred Heart scored its 3rd goal at 5:15 of the 3rd period on a shorthanded goal by Austin Magera.
Pelino finished the night with 23 saves, while Magnus made 38 stops.
Bentley will look to gain a series split in the finale tomorrow night at 6:05.
