PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Robert Morris took the lead in its opening round Atlantic Hockey playoff series with Bentley with a 3-1 victory over the Falcons on Friday night at Colonials Arena.
The teams were locked in a scoreless game for the first 30-plus minutes until RMU's Alex Tonge broke the deadlock at 13:10 of the second period to put them in front.
Three goals were then scored in the final 56 seconds of the third period. RMU's Brandon Watt scored a power play goal with 56 seconds left on the clock to the put the Colonials ahead 2-0.
Bentley though got a power play goal from senior Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc.) with 10 seconds left and an extra-attacker on the ice after he shot from the left side of the net from a tough angle and the puck took a deflection in.
RMU though won the ensuing face-off, and Tonge scored on the empty net with four seconds left to provide the final 3-1 margin.
Bentley finished the game with a 38-34 edge in shots, but RMU's Francis Marotte came up with 37 saves. Bentley's Aidan Pelino (Oakville, Ontario) also played well, with 31 saves on the night.
Now down 1-0 in the series, Bentley will look to force a deciding game three with a must-win game two on Saturday night.
