ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Team captain Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc.) netted his second career hat trick in a 5-2 win for the Bentley hockey team over RIT on Saturday night for the series sweep. It's the third straight year Bentley has swept RIT on the road.

Schmidt scored twice in the game's first 4:33 to stake the Falcons to an early 2-0 lead. He completed the hat trick with a goal with 9:20 left in the third period for Bentley's fifth goal of the night.

It didn't take long for Bentley to get on the scoreboard, as the team's top line of Andrew McDonald (New Brighton, Minn.), Luke Santerno (Smithers, B.C.) and Schmidt combined for a goal just 40 seconds into the game. McDonald entered the offensive zone on the left and hit Santerno as he drove in on net. He dropped a pass behind to Schmidt, who deked around goaltender Ian Andriano for the goal and the early lead.

Just over four minutes later, Schmidt made it 2-0 when he blasted a shot from above the right face-off circle past Andriano on the stick side.

RIT scored with 5:01 left in the first period to cut Bentley's lead to 2-1, but less than a minute later, sophomore Jonathan Desbiens (Montreal, Quebec) scored his third goal of the weekend to give his team a 3-1 lead. Ryner Gorowsky (Lino Lakes, Minn.) helped set the goal up with a centering pass from the right wing that took a deflection to Desbiens in the slot, who then snapped a shot past Andriano for the goal.

Bentley got the only goal of the second period from junior center Drew Callin (Middleton, Wisc.) at the 13:32 mark after he tipped in a shot from the point from defenseman Chris Buchanan (San Jose, Calif.) to take a commanding 4-1 lead.

Schmidt completed the hat trick with 9:20 remaining in the game with a power play goal for a 5-1 lead. Callin fed defenseman Tanner Jago (Brandon, Manitoba) down near the goal line, who then fed Schmidt with a sharp pass that he roofed past Andriano for the goal.

Bentley was actually outshot on the night 33-27, but goalie Aidan Pelino (Oakville, Ontario) made 31 saves. With the win, Bentley is now 6-0 all-time at the Polisseni Center.

The Falcons will look to make it four wins in a row next Friday, when they host Air Force in the first game of the final series at the JAR.
