Desbiens’ Two Goals Lifts Bentley Past RIT 4-3

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Jonathan Desbiens (Montreal, Quebec) scored two goals to help the Bentley hockey team claim a 4-3 victory over RIT at the Polisseni Center in Rochester on Friday night.

Defenseman Connor Brassard (Fitchburg, Mass.) had a power play goal, and sophomore Jake Kauppila (Gurnee, Ill.) also scored for the Falcons, who received 25 saves in net from Jayson Argue (Swan River, Manitoba) to help pick up the win.

Bentley improved its record to 5-0 all-time at the Polisseni Center, which opened in 2014, while Desbiens now six goals in three career games in that building.

It was RIT that actually led 2-0 after the first 11 minutes of the game on goals by freshman Nick Bruce and a power play goal from defenseman Adam Brubacher. But just 27 seconds after Brubacher's goal, a contact to the head penalty on Bruce started to turn the tide.

Brassard and the Falcons cashed in with a power play strike with 23 seconds left on the man-advantage, as he lasered in a shot from above the right face-off circle over the glove of goaltender Ian Andriano for his 8th goal of the season.

Into the second period and still trailing 2-1, Bentley had a golden opportunity to score the tying goal with a 5-on-3 power play that lasted for a 1:40, but could not cash in. However, just minutes after that chance passed by, Desbiens scored his first of the night at the 9:47 mark to tie the score at two.

Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc.) collected a loose puck in the defensive zone and skated all the way into Bentley's offensive zone down the left wing. As he approached the net, he held the puck along enough to hit Desbiens streaking down the middle, who one-timed his shot for the goal.

The game was still tied 2-2 early in the third period, until the Falcons scored twice in just 41 seconds to take control. Senior Matt Sieckhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) helped set up the first goal with a shot that was saved by Andriano. Sieckhaus got his own rebound and slid a pass across the goal line to Kauppila who shoved the puck past an RIT defender for the goal at 4:02. Desbiens then tallied his second goal of the night after he batted down the rebound from a Ryner Gorowsky (Lino Lakes, Minn.) shot and beat Andriano to the puck.

RIT made it interesting late with an extra attacker goal from Erik Brown with 1:04 left, but Bentley finished it off to claim the victory.
