Bentley Drops Series Finale to Canisius 5-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius used a 3-0 third period to break a 2-2 tie after two periods to take the series finale over Bentley University 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the HarborCenter in Buffalo.

The Falcons led 2-0 after the first period, but Canisius scored twice in the second period to knot the game 2-2 heading into the final period. The Griffs then scored fairly early in the third period, and added two late goals to come away with the victory.

Junior center Drew Callin (Middleton, Wisc.) and senior winger Matt Sieckhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) had the goals for the Falcons.

It took just over 10 minutes into the first period for a scoreless tie to be broken. It was Bentley that broke the deadlock, as Callin notched the goal with Ryner Gorowsky (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and defenseman Charlie Marchand (Calgary, Alberta) on the assists.

Just 2:05 later, Sieckhaus gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead after he tipped in a shot from Marchand in front of the net. Junior defenseman Tanner Jago (Brandon, Manitoba) had the secondary assist.

Bentley closed out the first period leading 2-0, as junior goalie Jake Bryniarski (Rochester, N.Y.) making the start, stopped seven shots in the first 20 minutes.

But Canisius started to turn the tables in the 2nd period. Left wing Jesse Pereira cut Bentley's lead in half 1:27 into the period with a goal, then the Griffs tied it with a goal from defenseman Jack Stander at the 8:43 mark.

Canisius got the eventual game-winning goal from first line center Ryan Schmelzer at 4:21 of the 3rd period. The next 12 minutes passed with the Falcons unable to find the tying goal, and Canisius got a power play goal from Schmelzer at 16:19 to take a late 4-2 lead.

Bryniarski ended the night with 23 saves, while his counterpart Daniel Urbani turned away 30 shots to earn the win.

Bentley will next return home after having played the last three weekends on the road. They will host Robert Morris for a series at the JAR that begins next Friday at 7:05.
