Desbiens’ Hat Trick Leads Bentley to 6-3 Win at RIT for Series Sweep

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman Jonathan Desbiens (Montreal, Quebec/West Kelowna) scored a hat trick, and Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc/Sioux City) had two goals as Bentley University defeated RIT 6-3 on Saturday night to complete a series sweep.

The game was tied 3-3 going into the 3rd period, but the Falcons struck for three goals over the final 20 minutes to secure the victory and its first series sweep of the season.

Schmidt put Bentley in front for good with a power play goal just 2:25 into the 3rd, with defensemen Tanner Jago (Brandon, Manitoba/Portage) and Brett  Orr (Elkhorn, Manitoba/Portage) on the assists.

Desbiens finished his hat trick about 10 minutes later to put the Falcons in front 5-3, which was the first hat trick by a Bentley player this season. He scored once in each of the first two periods on the night, and finished the series with four goals.

Schmidt finished the night off with an empty-net goal from the defensive zone with 49 seconds remaining to provide the final 6-3 margin. That was his 2nd goal of the night and his 9th in the last seven games.

Desbiens' first goal of the night, at 10:59 of the 1st period, leveled the score 1-1 after RIT took an early lead after left wing Erik Brown scored just 3:55 into the contest.

In the 2nd period, Bentley scored two straight just 47 seconds apart to race ahead to a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Drew Callin's (Middleton, Wisc./Janesville) 2nd goal of the series at 3:22 started it, followed by Desbiens' 2nd goal at 4:09 to put them in front 3-1. Later in the period, RIT responded with a pair of goals 1:27 apart to tie the game 3-3. The tying goal came from right wing Abbott Girduckis at the 15:56 mark.

The victory brought Bentley's Atlantic Hockey record to .500 at 8-8-4 and is its 4th win in the last six games. They'll look to keep it going next weekend when they host Air Force at the JAR.
