Pelino Makes 43 Saves, But No. 13 Vermont Clips Bentley 3-1

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman goalie Aidan Pelino (Oakville, Ontario/Chilliwack) shined between the pipes with 43 saves, but No. 13 Vermont did just enough to take a 3-1 victory over visiting Bentley University on Saturday at Gutterson Fieldhouse in a non-conference game.

The Catamounts got on the board first, just 4:50 into the first period, when forward Brady Shaw tipped-in a shot in front of the net that came from sophomore defenseman Mike Lee.

After that goal though, Pelino proceeded to dominate and kept UVM off the scoreboard for almost all of the next 45 minutes.

During that stretch, Bentley got a tying goal from junior winger Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc./Sioux City) at 8:08 of the 2nd period. Schmidt went five-hole on UVM goalie Mike Santaguida for his 7th goal of the season, with the assist going to Andrew McDonald (New Brighton, Minn./Fargo).

Following the goal, Bentley went on its first power play of the night after a tripping penalty on Shaw, but the UVM penalty kill kept the game tied 1-1.

Bentley's penalty kill then also kept the game tied over the rest of the 2nd period with two successful kills during the period's final five minutes.

Pelino and the Bentley defense kept the score tied for nearly the first 10 minutes of the 3rd period, until UVM finally went in front 2-1 at 9:57 on a goal by defenseman Trey Phillips.

The Falcons would push for the tying goal over the last 10 minutes, but the Catamounts added an insurance goal from junior Jarrid Privitera with 1:24 remaining to take a 3-1 lead.

After returning home, Bentley has a quick turnaround with its next game on Thursday at Frozen Fenway against Army West Point.
