Sacred Heart Outlasts Bentley in Game Two Overtime, 2-1

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Sacred Heart center Justin Danforth scored 13:06 into overtime to give the Pioneers a 2-1 overtime win over Bentley in game two of the Atlantic Hockey Playoffs first round on Saturday night. The win forces a decisive game three at the JAR Sunday night.

In a wide open overtime which pitted Bentley trying to put the series away and Sacred Heart trying to extend it, the Pioneers got the winning goal when Danforth was sprung for a breakaway off a pass from behind the center line. He skated into the offensive zone and fired off a shot from the top of the slot for the win.

Both teams had good chances in the extra session, but SHU held an 11-5 edge in shots.

After a scoreless first period, Bentley took a 1-0 lead at 10:41 of the 2nd period on a goal by Tyler Deresky (Flemington, N.J./Amarillo). Defenseman Tanner Jago (Brandon, Manitoba/Portage) fired off a slap shot from the blue line that SHU goalie Brett Magnus made a pad save on. But the rebound bounced to Deresky, who drilled it into the back of the net to give the Falcons the lead.

Bentley killed off two SHU power plays the remainder of the period, and went into the 3rd frame still leading 1-0. Tight defense and goaltending by senior Gabe Antoni (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield) kept the lead at 1-0 well into the 3rd period, until a power play goal for the Pioneers' Connor Doherty at 12:39 tied it.

Bentley had two power play chances the rest of regulation, including one beginning with 2:22 left, but came up empty in both.

Antoni finished with 37 save on the night, while Magnus stopped 36 shots.

Sunday night's game three will mark the third straight year Bentley will play a decisive playoff game on home-ice. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
