Robert Morris Tops Bentley in Series Opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Robert Morris senior forward Greg Gibson scored two power play goals to lead the Colonial offense Friday night as they defeated the Bentley hockey team 5-1 in the series opener between the two teams at the 84 Lumber Arena.

Robert Morris (9-3-3 AHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead inside of the opening 3:00 minutes of the 1st period and didn't look back. Sophomore Brady Ferguson opened the scoring at 1:44, and Gibson followed with a power play goal at 2:55.

Bentley kept the Colonials off the scoreboard into the 2nd period, until senior Brandon Denham made it 3-0 for the hosts at the 7:33 mark. A little less than two minutes later though, freshman Drew Callin (Middleton, Wisc./Janesville) got one back for Bentley with his 4th goal of the season, assisted by Cody DePourcq (Penticton, B.C./Penticton).

The Falcons held a 12-8 advantage in shots in the 3rd frame, and a 43-41 advantage on the night, but the game was put out of reach by two Robert Morris goals early in the 3rd period, including Gibson's 2nd of the night at 2:47.

The defeat evens Bentley's Atlantic Hockey record to 6-6-2 on the season. They'll look to gain a split of the series tomorrow night in the series finale at 7:05 pm.
