RPI Slips Past Bentley 3-2 Despite Rally

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Goals by Jake Ahlgren (Fergus Falls, Minn./Wenatchee) and Max French (West Kelowna, B.C./West Kelowna) brought Bentley back from 3-0 down against RPI, but despite a strong 3rd period they could not complete the rally as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Engineers Friday night at the JAR.

With RPI leading 3-0, Ahlgren's goal, in a 4-on-4 situation, from in between the face-off dots with 3:33 left in the 2nd frame got Bentley to within 3-1. Bentley had a further opportunity at the end of the period after a RPI interference penalty, but the Engineers killed it off to close out the frame.

Just seven minutes into the 3rd period, French got the Falcons to within 3-2 with a nifty deke move around RPI goalie Cam Hackett, assisted by Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc./Sioux City) and Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C./Nanaimo). The goal was the 7th for French in his last six games.

Bentley continued to apply the pressure, outshooting RPI 12-7 in the 3rd, in search of the tying goal. Falcons goalie Gabe Antoni (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield) was pulled with 1:03 left to give them the extra skater, and it created a great chance for Schmidt in the slot, but his shot whistled just wide and RPI was able to hang on in the final seconds.

RPI controlled play early, getting two 1st period goals from forwards Lou Nanne at 8:41 and Mark Miller at 17:44, for a 2-0 lead as they outshot Bentley 13-7 in the opening period.

But the Falcons worked their way back into the game as the shots in the 2nd frame were 14-14, and Ahlgren's goal, his 3rd of the season, jumpstarted the team's rally attempt.

Hackett made 31 saves to earn the win for RPI, who improve to 6-4-2 on the season. Bentley drops to 5-4-1. They get back on the ice Tuesday night when they visit Boston University at 7:00 pm from Agganis Arena.
