Weinstein Named Atlantic Hockey’s Best Defenseman

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University senior Steve Weinstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Vernon) has been named Atlantic Hockey's Best Defenseman, the conference announced Thursday night as they revealed its 2014-15 major individual award winners. The awards are voted on by the conference's 11 head coaches.

Weinstein is the first Bentley player to be named Atlantic Hockey's Best Defenseman. The award caps a decorated career for the LA native that saw him finish as the highest scoring defenseman in the program's Division I history with 104 points. Of his 104 points, 90 were assists, which is third most in school history overall.

Also named first team All-Atlantic Hockey this season, Weinstein was fourth on the team in points with 23 on five goals and 18 assists. He's currently tied for most points scored among Atlantic Hockey defensemen. He also blocked 28 shots, and is tied for sixth in the conference with 14 power play points.

Weinstein's 2013-14 season was one for the record books, as he set a school single-season record with 37 assists, and finished the year leading the country in points per game among defensemen (1.03). He was also named first team All-Conference and was one of three finalists for the Walter Brown Award, given to the best-American born college hockey player.

He finished his career with 145 games played, second most in school history only to teammate Brett Switzer.
