MILFORD, Conn. – Sacred Heart snapped Bentley's seven-game unbeaten streak with a 4-1 victory over the Falcons in Atlantic Hockey action at the Milford Ice Pavilion Thursday night. Defenseman Steve Weinstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Vernon) had the goal for Bentley.
With Bentley trailing 2-0 in the third period, Weinstein scored off an assist from classmate Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove) at 6:34, just two seconds after a power play had expired. The goal was Weinstein's fifth of the season and 23rd point.
The Pioneers though took the momentum right back a little over four minutes later as the Falcons yielded a shorthanded goal at 10:47 from sophomore Evan Jasper, which came 1:16 into an interference penalty on Justin Danforth. That made the score 3-1.
Bentley had a chance to cut into the lead with another power play opportunity at 17:49. Goalie Jayson Argue (Swan River, Manitoba/Nanaimo) was pulled in favor of an extra-attacker for a 6-on-4 chance, but Sacred Heart's Ben Lake scored on the empty net at 19:08 to put the game away at 4-1.
Lake opened the scoring just 1:47 into the opening period to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead, and freshman Alex Butcher made it 2-0 just past the halfway point of the second period.
The defeat drops Bentley's Atlantic Hockey record to 14-8-5, and it is just the team's second loss in the last 10 games. Sacred Heart's AHC record goes to 10-12-6.
Bentley will close out the regular season at home on Saturday when they host Holy Cross on Senior Night. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
