Bentley, Canisius Tie 2-2; Gladiuk & Kubiak Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Bentley and Canisius played to a 2-2 tie Friday night in the Atlantic Hockey series opener between the two teams at the HarborCenter. Junior Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C./Nanaimo) and Alex Kubiak (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Steel) had the goals for the Falcons.

Bentley freshman goalie Jayson Argue (Swan River, Manitoba/Nanaimo) turned in another solid performance with 28 saves. His counterpart, Canisius' Keegan Asmundson, made 34 stops.

With the tie, the Falcons' Atlantic Hockey record goes 8-5-3 for 19 points, while the Golden Griffins go to 8-4-5 for 21 points.

After a scoreless first period, the first six-plus minutes of the second period were scoreless as well until Kubiak notched an unassisted, shorthanded goal at 6:57. That was his fifth goal of the season.

A little less than four minutes later, Canisius tied it up on a power play goal from freshman defenseman David Bennett at 10:59, his first of the season.

The Falcons though went back on top with a power play goal from Gladiuk at 17:06 of the second to take a 2-1 lead. That was his 15th goal of the season, and also his 26th career power play goal, which ties the program's career record. Defensemen Matt Blomquist (Blaine, Minn./Coulee Region) and Steve Weinstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Vernon) had the assists.

Argue had 20 saves through two periods as the Falcons held a 2-1 lead, but the Griffs tied it up at 13:01 of the third on a goal by freshman Nolan Sheeran. Neither team scored before the end of the regulation.

Bentley had the best chance to score the winner in OT as Gladiuk fired a point blank shot on net with just over a minute left, only to be denied by Asmundson. Bentley held a 4-3 advantage in shots in the extra session.

The same two teams conclude their series tomorrow night.
