Bentley Takes Series Opener From Air Force 2-1

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C./Nanaimo) scored the go-ahead goal 3:58 into the third period as the Bentley hockey team defeated Air Force 2-1 Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action at Ryan Arena.

Gladiuk's 12th goal of the season put Bentley ahead 2-1, and they stayed ahead for the final 16-plus minutes to close out the victory. Senior Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove) had one goal and one assist, and freshman goalie Jayson Argue (Swan River, Manitoba/Nanaimo) made 33 saves to pick up his second win of the season.

Gladiuk's goal came just seconds after a power play expired, and the Falcons were able to keep the puck in the offensive zone. A shot by Switzer on net was saved by Air Force goalie Chris Truehl, Gladiuk then pounced on the loose puck and jammed it home to give Bentley the 2-1 lead.

Truehl was pulled by Air Force with 2:12 remaining for the extra-attacker, but Bentley held on and came close on two occasions of scoring an empty net goal.

Air Force took a 1-0 lead with just 50 seconds left in the first period on a goal by Scott Holm. Both teams took a high number of shots in the first period, with Bentley holding a slight 13-12 advantage.

Bentley tied it up at 8:05 of the second on a shorthanded goal by Switzer, his fourth goal of the season. Alex Kubiak (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Steel) got a rush started from the neutral zone down the other end of the ice. Kubiak then fed Switzer, who fired a shot past Truehl on the far post to tie the game up.

Air Force outshot Bentley 16-9 in the third period, but Argue stopped them all to help Bentley secure the win.

Bentley improves to 5-4-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, while Air Force drops to 4-4-1. These two teams are right back at it tomorrow night in the series finale.
