Penn State Rallies Late to Clip Bentley 3-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State scored twice in 16 seconds late in the third period to rally past the Falcons and take a 3-2 victory in a non-conference matchup Friday night in front of a crowd of over 5,900 at Pegula Ice Arena.

Bentley led for most of the night after getting power play goals from both Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside) and Max French (West Kelowna, B.C./West Kelowna) in the first period.

It was 2-0 Bentley until just before the midway point of the second period. That's when PSU's Scott Conway found the back of the net to make it a one goal game.

But Bentley, and goalie Blake Dougherty (East Amherst, N.Y./Bay State Breakers), who turned in a second straight solid performance, made that lead stand up until deep into the third period.

But a Falcons penalty for elbowing at 16:21 of the third period is when the game turned. 40 seconds into the Nittany Lions' power play, senior Taylor Holstrom converted on the man-advantage to tie the game 2-2.

Just 16 seconds later, junior Eric Scheid ripped a shot just under the crossbar to stunningly give PSU a 3-2 lead.

Dougherty was pulled in favor of the extra-attacker with 1:05 left, but the Falcons could not find the tying goal and suffered their second 3-2 defeat of this hard-fought series.

Dougherty finished the night with 46 saves and was named the game's second star. While the power play goals by Grieve and French gave Bentley four power play goals for the series.

The Falcons drop to 3-4 on the season, while the Nittany Lions improve to 5-1-2. Bentley's next series is at home, as they welcome in Niagara for a two game Atlantic Hockey set beginning Friday.
