Grieve Nets Game Winner as Bentley Scores 5-2 Win Over Rensselaer

TROY, N.Y. – Senior captain Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) scored the eventual game-winning goal at 9:09 of the third period as the Bentley hockey team scored a non-conference win over Rensselaer of the ECAC 5-2 Friday night in front of over 3,000 fans at Houston Field House.

The Falcons even their record to 2-2 on the season with the victory, as they win at RPI for the second time in the series history. The Engineers fall to 1-4.

After a scoreless first period, Bentley grabbed a 1-0 lead on the first career goal by freshman Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc./Sioux City) at 7:35 of the second. The Falcons held that lead for more than 10 minutes, until RPI's freshman forward Lou Nanne tied the game with a goal at 18:03.

But Bentley took control in the third period as Grieve scored his first of the season at 9:09 to give them the lead for good. A power play goal by sophomore Will Suter (Omaha, Neb./Lincoln Stars) followed at 13:26 to make it a 3-1 game. Defenseman Matt Maher (Avon, Conn./Westside Warriors) and junior Derek Bacon (Calgary, Alberta/Okotoks Oilers) had the assists.

RPI got to within 3-2 with another goal by Nanne just 13 seconds later. But Bentley hung on the rest of the way until RPI pulled its goalie. The Falcons took advantage of the empty net twice as Max French (West Kelowna, B.C./West Kelowna) scored with 44 seconds left, and Schmidt scored for a second time with 16 seconds remaining.

Junior goalie Gabe Antoni (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield Jr. Blues) made 18 saves to earn the win.

The Falcons will go for the series sweep Saturday night when these two teams play again at 7:00 pm.
