WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Bentley hockey team used a second period explosion where they scored five goals to power past Army 6-1 in the Atlantic Hockey series opener Friday night in West Point. Junior Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) had two goals to lead the way.

After trailing 1-0 after the first period, Bentley's five-goal second frame included scoring four times just 3:49 apart to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Junior Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints) and senior Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) each had three assists on the night for the Falcons, who win their second straight contest.

Bentley's run of five straight goals began with a strike from defenseman Matt Blomquist (Blaine, Minn./Coulee Region Chill) on a one-timer from the point, with Gensler providing the primary assist. Just 50 seconds later, Grieve netted his first of the night to give Bentley a 2-1 lead at 8:52 of the period. The goal came off a shot on net by Switzer that was saved by Army goalie Tanner Creel, but he left a rebound that Grieve deposited into the back of the net.

Bentley's third goal in just 2:38 of game time came from sophomore Derek Bacon (Calgary, Alberta/Okotoks Oilers), with defenseman Kyle O'Brien (Tewksbury, Mass./Cushing Prep) getting the primary assist. O'Brien took a slap shot from the point, and Bacon fought through traffic in front of the net to get his stick on it and tip the puck past Creel for the goal.

The Falcons took a 4-1 lead at 11:51 on freshman Tyler Deresky's (Flemington, N.J./Amarillo Bulls) first career goal. Deresky finished off a two-on-one break into the offensive zone, taking a centering pass from Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues) from the left wing.

The fifth goal of the period came from Grieve on the power play at 18:40, his team-leading 19^th goal of the season. Creel made a glove save on a shot by Blomquist, but allowed a big rebound that Grieve banged in on the doorstep of the goal.

Freshman Max French (West Kelowna, B.C./West Kelowna Warriors) notched a power play goal at 11:09 of the third period, from Bacon and Switzer, to provide the final margin.

Bentley improves to 13-5-4 in Atlantic Hockey play with the victory, while Army falls to 3-19-0 in conference games. The Falcons will go for the series sweep Saturday night when they play host to the Black Knights at Ryan Arena for a 7:05 pm start.
