Bentley Drops Game One to Canisius 4-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius College scored three third period goals on its way to a 4-0 victory over Bentley University in game one of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament first round Friday night. Senior Preston Shupe had two goals to lead the Canisius offense.

Bentley trailed just 1-0 going into the third period, but a goal from senior defenseman Ben Parker and two from Shupe propelled Canisius to the series opening victory and a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Canisius' penalty kill, which came into the series with a 90.0% success rate, killed off several important Bentley power plays on its way to the win and was 6-6 on the night. Their first goal came just 39 seconds after killing off a Bentley power play in the second period that had several good chances, and came from sophomore Cody Freeman at the 5:00 minute mark to give them a 1-0 lead.

Bentley had a chance to get the tying goal with a 5-on-3 power play that lasted 1:22 and started with 3:43 remaining in the period, but came up empty as they continued to trail 1-0 into the third period. Canisius then went up 2-0 at the 2:26 mark of the third on a goal by Parker on a slap shot from the point with traffic in front of the net.

Shupe then scored off a rebound in front of the net at 15:09 of the third to make it 3-0, and he added an empty-net goal with 36 seconds left to finish out the scoring.

Junior goalie Tony Capobianco made 35 saves for the shutout.

Bentley will look to even the series at one in Saturday night's game two. Face-off is 7:05 pm
