Bentley Tops Sacred Heart 7-1 in Season-Opener

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Bentley University scored four power play goals and three shorthanded goals as the Falcon hockey team got its 2012-13 season off to a roaring start with a 7-1 victory over Sacred Heart Tuesday night in Atlantic Hockey action at Ryan Skating Arena.

The Falcons' special teams were dominant, coming up with each goal. Junior Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) and sophomore Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) both picked up where they left off from last season, as Grieve had two goals and Gensler had a goal and three assists. Freshman Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C./Nanaimo Clippers) had a goal and an assist in his debut, and defenseman Steve Weinstein (Los Angles, Calif./Vernon Vipers) had a goal and two assists.

Grieve struck first on the power play at 6:51 of the first as Bentley led 1-0 at intermission.

But Bentley did most of its damage in the second period with four goals, three on the power play and one shorthanded to lead 5-1 after two. Gensler, Weinstein and Grieve had the power play goals, and senior Brett Hartung (Tallahassee, Fla./Wichita Falls Wildcats) had the shorthanded one, scoring on an end-to-end breakaway.

Gladiuk and junior Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues) had shorthanded goals in the third period.

Goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) needed to make just 15 saves to earn the win.

The Falcons improve to 1-0 on the season while the Pioneers fall to 0-2, 0-1 in Atlantic Hockey. They next head out to Ann Arbor to take on the fifth-ranked Michigan Wolverines Friday night at 7:35 pm.

Note: Every member of the Bentley team wore the name EDEN on the back of their uniforms tonight, in honor of friend of the program Michael Eden, who lost his battle with cancer in May. Michael's sister, Alyssa, dropped the ceremonial first puck before the game.
