Bentley Sweeps Weekend With 4-1 Victory At Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Bentley University swept the weekend with a 4-1 victory at Army's Tate Rink Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey action. Freshmen Matt Maher (Avon, Conn./Westside Warriors) and Alex Kubiak (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Steel) each scored their first career goals in the third period to put the Falcons in front.

The Falcons improve to 4-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, 4-7-1 overall and are 3-1-1 in their last five games. Army drops to 1-5-2 and 1-3-1.

Sophomore goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 40 saves for his fourth win of the year.

With the score knotted at one after two periods, Maher first gave Bentley the lead at 5:45 and Kubiak added to it at 12:16.

Maher's goal came on the power play, as Army's Marcel Alvarez was serving a two-minute minor for tripping at 4:25. Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) fed him a pass from the blue line to just inside the left face-off circle, and Maher beat Black Knights goalie Ryan Leets with a wrist shot. The assist extended Gensler's point streak to eight games.

Two more freshmen, Kubiak and Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints), produced Bentley's third goal. Switzer took a shot on net, and Kubiak was there in front to knock in the rebound while sprawling forward for the goal.

Sophomore Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) made it 4-1 for the Falcons with his first goal of the year, and the team's second power play tally of the game, at 14:50 while Army's Danny Colvin was serving a five-minute major.

Both teams scored in the first period, with Bentley getting the first one at 10:10 as sophomore Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues) finished off a perfectly executed 3-on-1 with his second goal of the year. Breton started the rush down the ice with Rickord and freshman Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) supporting him. Breton fed a pass to Grieve on the right, who then centered it to Rickord on the left post for a tap-in goal.

The lead was short-lived however, as Bryant Skarda netted a power play goal for Army at 15:38, ripping a slap shot from outside the right face-off circle for his first goal of the year.

Rickord, Breton and Switzer each had two points for Bentley, who travel out to Erie, Pa., to face Mercyhurst for a series next weekend.
