Johnson, Sideris & Switzer Senior Award Recipients

Three-year starting quarterback Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS) and field hockey All-America Stephanie Sideris (Watertown/Watertown HS) have been named the Outstanding Senior Athletes at Bentley University, and hockey standout Mike Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/ Olds Grizzlys) was selected as the 2011-12 recipient of the Edward J. Powers Award as Bentley’s premier senior student-athlete.

The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced on Thursday that Bentley University sophomore forward Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) has been named the 60th recipient of the Walter Brown Award, which is given annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England.

It was a big night for Bentley at the Atlantic Hockey awards banquet on Thursday as the Falcons took home two major awards and had five players earn All-Conference honors. Head coach Ryan Soderquist was named Coach of the Year and Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) was selected as the Rookie of the Year. Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) was named first team All-Atlantic Hockey.

Senior Cameron Burt ended the second longest game in Bentley’s Division I history by scoring 1:23 into the second overtime, as RIT staved off elimination with a thrilling 5-4, game two win over Bentley in the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals Saturday night.

In venues from the Dana Center to Rochester, N.Y. to Mankato, Minn., Bentley University teams and athletes will be in action Saturday, competing in NCAA Championships and the Atlantic Hockey Playoffs. Women's basketball will be taking on Franklin Pierce in the second round of te NCAA Regional, hockey will be attempting to sweep past RIT in the AHA playoffs and Amy Varsell will be running the 800 in the NCAA Track Championships.

Sixth-seeded Bentley and third-seeded RIT are set to square off this weekend in a best-of-three Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal series at Ritter Arena in Rochester, N.Y.
