Bentley Turns Tables, Stuns Sacred Heart with Overtime Win

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Less than 24 hours after allowing five unanswered goals in a 6-3 loss, Bentley University turned the tables on Sacred Heart and rallied from 4-1 down in the third period to win 5-4 in overtime Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Hockey play.

Facing a three-goal deficit entering the final period and looking at the prospect of a sweep, the Falcons scored four answered goals to stun the Pioneers. Sophomore Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Westminster Prep) scored the winner 47 seconds into overtime after depositing the rebound from a Ryan Kayfes (Maple Grove, Minn./Fairbanks Ice Dogs) slap shot past goalie Olivier St. Onge.

Senior captain Dustin Cloutier (Berkley, Mich./Mahoning Valley Phantoms) got the rally started, netting a power play goal at 1:56 of the third to make it 4-2. After Sacred Heart nearly scored short-handed, the Falcons started a rush down the other end of the ice. Campanelli got the puck into the offensive zone on the right wing, and fed a pass to Cloutier streaking down the slot, who beat St. Onge with a wrist shot.

Less than four minutes later, freshman Zach Ledford (Folsom, Calif./Wichita Falls Wildcats) made it 4-3 with his first career goal.

Sacred Heart looked like they were going to hang on for the win as the clock wound down and the tying goal wouldn't come, until Mike Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Olds Grizzlys) scored with 1:01 left. With the Bentley net open on the other side of the ice, Switzer put in his second goal in as many games to force overtime.

Goalie Kyle Rank (Islip, N.Y./Markham Waxers), who came on in relief after the second period, was instrumental in the win with 11 third period saves.

The first period was scoreless but the offenses came to life in the second. However, Sacred Heart got the better of the period, outscoring Bentley 4-1.

Junior Matt Gingera got the scoring started at 8:01, putting home his own rebound off a saved shot.

Bentley's Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) got his team right back in it though 42 seconds later with his ninth goal of the season.

From that point forward in the period however, it was all Pioneers. Senior David Berube put the hosts ahead at 12:28, and sophomore Ben Ketchum scored on the power play at 17:47, his first of two on the afternoon, to make it 3-1.

Just as the period was about to end, Sacred Heart added a fourth goal as Ketchum struck again. Defenseman Alex Stuart fed a long, looping ice-length pace to Ketchum in the Pioneers' offensive zone behind the Bentley defense, and Ketchum controlled the bouncing puck to score on a breakaway.

That, however, was Sacred Heart's last goal of the afternoon.

The Falcons improve to 8-14-5 overall and 7-10-4 in Atlantic Hockey with the victory, while the Pioneers fall to 4-19-5 and 4-12-5. It's their first loss in three games at the Arena at Harbor Yard.

Bentley is back in action with a home-and-home series against AIC beginning Friday night in Springfield.
