Gensler’s Pair Leads Bentley Past UConn 3-2

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Freshman Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) scored a pair of first period goals and senior Erik Peterson (Shorewood, Minn./Sioux Falls Stampede) netted what would be the game-winner in the second period, as Bentley University topped UConn 3-2 on Friday in Atlantic Hockey action at Ryan Skating Arena.

The freshman netted his fourth and fifth goals of the season less than four minutes apart in the first period, the second goal a highlight reel play that gave the Falcons a 2-0 edge.

After the Falcons got off to a slow start, Gensler gave them a 1-0 lead at 6:46 on the team's first shot of the game.

At the 10:28 mark he was at it again. After taking a pass from junior Trent Bonnett (Butler, Pa./Mahoning Valley Phantoms), he deked around a UConn defender to spring himself loose for a breakaway and beat Huskies goalie Garrett Bartus.

Just 33 second before the end of the period though, UConn got back in the game with an Andrew Olson goal on a delayed penalty.

Peterson lit the lamp for the fifth time this season early in the second period, scoring unassisted to give the Falcons a 3-1 advantage.

UConn again made it a one goal game at the 13:45 mark, as freshman Billy Latta fed sophomore James Gallagher on a two-on-one that left Bentley goalie Joe Calvi (New Lenox,Ill./New England Jr. Huskies) without much of a chance.

The third period was scoreless, but Calvi and the Falcons stepped up defensively as they killed off three UConn penalties, holding them to just one shot total. The Huskies held a 10-5 advantage in shots during the period and pulled Bartus for the extra-attacker with 40 seconds left, but Calvi saved UConn's only shot.

The senior goalie continued his strong play, making 24 saves on the night to earn his third win of the season.

Bentley is back in action Saturday night at Holy Cross.
