Bio

The 2021-22 academic year was the 12th and final year for golf professional Mickey Herron as head men's golf at Bentley University. He announced his retirement in June 2022.

The Falcons qualified for the NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Regionals in each of his first nine seasons and were in the hunt for a tenth straight before the pandemic cancelled the 2020 regional tournament. Herron's team returned to the NCAA tourrnament in 2021 and narrowly missed advancing to the NCAA championships. In May 2019, Bentley finished second in the regional championships, qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championship as a team for the first time in program history. Though the Falcons finished 17th in the nation, they were paired with the number one team for the first two days of competition and held their own each round.

Competing in the Northeast-10 Conference, Bentley has emerged as champions on three occasions (2011, 2014, 2017) and runners-up three more times. Herron’s tenure includes 22 tournament victories in 11 seasons. In addition to success on the course, Bentley golf has also excelled in the classroom under Herron. The Falcons have captured the Northeast-10 Academic Team Excellence Award for golf four times, and a Bentley student-athlete won the conference's Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for golf six times (Matt Michel in 2012 and 2013, Harry Kirkpatrick in 2014, Cal Meyers in 2017 and 2018, and Tommy Ethier in 2020).

Bentley has twice earned All-Academic honors from the Golf Coaches Association of Americam (2012-13, 2016-17). Five of his student-athletes have earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and his student-athletes have been tabbed as Srixon/Cleveland All-America Scholars.

In addition to his coaching duties, Herron serves as the New England PGA Tournament Manager for the Cape Cod chapter. He is a past president of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association, a member of the NEIGA Board, and has formerly served as the NE10 golf coaches' liaison and as a member of the NCAA Divsion II Men's Golf Regional Advisory Committee.

Herron works as a rules official for both the NEPGA junior tour and the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association. He also has been a longtime chair of interviewing committee for the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund – a Massachusetts based financial assistance organization which aids college bound youth who work in the golf industry in the commonwealth.

Herron has won the Dutch Wessner Award seven times – emblematic of player of the year within the Cape Cod PGA region.  He has played in three PGA Tour events, six National Club Professional championships and three Senior National Club Pro championships.

Herron has been cited for the NEPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award (2007), the Cape Cod PGA Professional of the Year Award (2005) and the Cape Cod PGA Teacher of the Year Award (1997). In addition, he's authored numerous articles on golf design and instruction for several New England publications.

Herron, who earned to PGA membership in 1982, is the former Director of Golf at several New England golf facilities. He played for both the Macalester College golf team (NAIA) and the University of Pennsylvania golf team (Div I) in the mid-70’s.
