Meyers Shines During Day 1 of NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional

UPDATE: Following the completion of the 1st round Tuesday morning, Bentley was in 16th place, nine out of the top five, and Cal Meyers was tied for fifth place, two strokes out of the lead.

BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. – The play of sophomore Cal Meyers (Richfield, Wisc./Slinger HS) was a bright spot for the Bentley University golf team on Monday during a rain-delayed first day of the 2016 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional at the Timber Banks Golf Club.

Meyers fired a two-over-par 74 and is currently tied for eighth place among 108 golfers. Four of the seven in front of him will have to conclude their opening round on Tuesday morning after darkness and a lengthy morning rain delay prevented all from finishing their first 18.

Among those who completed their rounds, Meyers (one birdie, three bogeys) is two strokes back of both Brendan Hunter (St. Thomas Aquinas) and John Clare (Le Moyne). Assumption's Matt Wessenberg is at the top of the leaderboard as he's two-under through nine.

As a team, Bentley turned  in a 320 with Meyers the only one of the five players to break 80. The Falcons are 17th of 20 overall and 11th among the 12 that finished play. The top five, along with the top two individuals on a non-qualifying team, will advance to the NCAA Championships in Colorado later this month.

St. Thomas Aquinas, with a 306, had the best score among the teams that finished, with Concordia College (N.Y.) a stroke back.

Senior Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and freshman Doug Kulikowski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland HS), Bentley's top two for the season in terms of stroke average, both had difficult days. Kulikowski turned in an 81, 4.4 above his season norm, and Oliver had a season-high 82, his first round above 78 all year and 8.7 higher than his season mark.

The second round will follow completion of the first round on Tuesday with the tournament running through Wednesday.
