Oliver Helps Bentley to 2nd Place Finish in Newport Classic

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Led by a third-place showing from junior Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/ Lincoln Academy), the Bentley University golf team finished second among eight teams in the Bentley Spring Classic, hosted by the Falcons Wednesday at the Newport National Golf Club.

The Falcons posted a 310 team score to finish six strokes back of American International College. In ten tournaments this season, Bentley has been in the top three eight times, including all three played this spring.

Oliver, on a very cold and windy day, turned in a three-over 75 to finish two strokes off the pace set by a pair of AIC players, Miguel Siercke and Austin Ball, the co-medalists with one-over 73s. His day included back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes.

Bentley had four of the eight players who broke 80 with Oliver joined by freshman Brett Chatfield (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan HS) and senior co-captains Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) and Quincy Coulter (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS). Stoddard and Coulter tied for fourth in the 45-player field with 78's, and Chatfield was eighth with a 79.

Two more Falcons, junior Matt Freitag (Cheshire, Mass./Hoosac Valley HS) and sophomore John Perkins (Middleton, Mass./Phillips Andover Acad.), were right behind them, tying for ninth with an 80. Both were competing in the tournament as individuals.

Next Tuesday, Bentley is at the Worcester State Invitational.
