Strong Second Day Helps Bentley Tie for 2nd in California Vulcan Invitational

BELLE VERNE, Pa. – The Bentley University Falcons registered the tournament's best second-day team score and rose to tie for second place in the California Vulcan Invitational, which concluded Saturday at the Cedar Brook Golf Course.

Coach Mickey Herron's team followed its opening-day 318 with a 312 to finish the tournament at 630, even with West Liberty University and four strokes back of the host team, California University. It was the sixth time in nine tournaments this season that the Falcons have finished in the top two.

Leading the Falcons was senior co-captain Jon Stoddard (Duxbury/Duxbury HS), who tied for fifth in the 68-player field. He turned in a one-over 73 to finish at 152, seven strokes off the winning pace. Stoddard had the second most pars in the tournament, finishing with 26.

Bentley had three other golfers all finish with a 36-hole score of 160, tying for 20th place. They were junior Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy), senior co-captain Quincy Coulter (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) and freshman Cal Meyers (Richfield, Wisc./Slinger HS). On Saturday, Oliver shot a 78, Coulter posted his second straight 80, and Meyers turned in an 83.

West Liberty's Mathew Iceton earned medalist honors after shooting a one-over 145, winning the tournament by four strokes over California's Jordan Eck.

On Wednesday, the Falcons will compete in their own Bentley Newport Classic at the Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, R.I.
