Oliver Shines during Day 2 of NCAA Div. II Golf Regional

CHARLESTON, W.V. – Bentley University sophomore Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) birdied four straight holes and finished with an even-par 71 to lead the Falcons during day two of the 2014 NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Regional at the Edgewood Country Club on Tuesday.

Oliver, who matched his low round as a collegian, has a 36-hole total of 145, putting him in a tie for 19th in the 107-player tournament.  Among Northeast-10 Conference competitors, he'll begin Wednesday's final round tied for sixth place.

After beginning the day with a par, Oliver birdied the next four holes, including a pair of par-threes. He was two under before a double-bogey on 15, and after a bogey on 17, he salvaged par with a birdie on the par-five, 537-yard 18th.

Oliver's performance helped Bentley move up one position to tenth in the team standings. A second-day 297, matching the team's best single-day score of the season, gave coach Mickey Herron's team a total of 596. The Falcons are eight strokes out of fifth place and 15 behind third-place Adelphi University.

Senior Ryan Hudson (Purchase, N.Y./Iona Prep) also had a strong second day for Bentley with his 74 including an eagle on the 532-yard par-five 16th. He's tied for 48th with a 151 after opening the tournament with a 77.

Also tied for 48th is Bentley junior Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS), who posted a 76, one higher than his Monday score.  Falcon senior captain Harry Kirkpatrick (Lancaster, Mass./ Nashoba Reg. HS) is a stroke behind Hudson and Stoddard following his second straight 76.

Remarkable scoring by St. Thomas Aquinas and Indiana University (Pa.) have separated those two from the rest of the pack. STAC was 11-under as a team and owns a two-stroke lead over IUP, which posted a 10-under 274.

Individually, IUP's Zack Kempa will begin the final round with a 68-70-138 and a one-stroke lead over Brendan Hunter (St. Thomas Aquinas) and Jamin Smith (Charleston).

Final round action gets underway at 7:30 am Wednesday with Bentley teeing off from noon to 12:40 pm.
