Strong Final Two Days Elevates Bentley to 10th in NCAA Regional

WHEELING, W.V. – With four of its five players shooting 76 or better during Wednesday's third and final round, the Bentley University golf team finished in a tie for tenth in the 2013 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional at the Oglebay Resort and Conference Center.

Bentley's 598 score over the final two rounds was the tournament's sixth best and elevated the Falcons to the middle of the 20-team tournament after a rough first day had the team tied for 19th at that point. After opening with a 328, coach Mickey Herron's team rebounded with a 303 Tuesday and closed out the regional with a final round 295, for a total count of 926.

Bentley, the number eight seed out of the East Region, was third among the ten East teams and first among four Northeast-10 Conference squads.

Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) closed out his freshman season with Bentley's best round of the tournament, a career-best and even-par 71. That put him in a tie for 46 in the 108-player field, along with a teammate, Dan McQueen (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Reg. HS), both at 233 for 36 holes.

Bentley's final-day scores also included a 73 by McQueen, a second straight 75 from sophomore Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) and a 77 from senior Academic All-America Matt Michel (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS) in his finale as a collegian.

Michel had Bentley's highest finish in the tournament as he tied for 34th with a 79-75-76-230. Stoddard followed in a tie for 39th with an 82-75-75-232. Among NE-10 players, they were third and fifth, respectively.

Michel was tied for fifth in par-3 scoring (3.17) and tied for tenth with 34 pars. McQueen was tied for third in par-5 scoring at 4.67, and Oliver was tied for ninth with seven birdies.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania used a final-round 288 to claim the team title by five over Wilmington University (Del.), 891-896. IUP also had the medalist with Zach Kempa edging Millersville's Robert Coyne by a single stroke, 214-215.
