Bentley Prevails at Bloomfield, 82-76, after Wright-Kinsey 3 Forces OT

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Sophomore guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School) buried a second-chance three-pointer at the end of regulation and senior forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Williston Northampton School) scored six of his team-high 17 in OT as Bentley University survived a lengthy second-half drought to defeat Bloomfield College, 82-76, in non-conference men's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Bloomfield Gym.

Bentley, which managed only 18 points over the final 18 minutes of the second half after building a 52-35 lead, became the fourth team in the East Region to reach double figures in wins and completed the 2019 portion of the schedule at 10-2. Bloomfield dropped to 6-6 overall.

With his team down 70-67 after Bloomfield junior forward Rich Chapman (Newark, N.J.) made it a three-point game with 11 seconds left in regulation, Wright-Kinsey launched a three from the corner as time was running down. Sophomore guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuiness HS) corralled the rebound and quickly got it back to Wright-Kinsey, who had moved closer to the right wing. Wright-Kinsey just beat the horn and this time he was on target, making it a 70-all game.

Hudson broke the game's final tie with a lay-up with 1:27 left and added another with 40 seconds remaining to give Bentley its second four-point lead in OT, 78-74. Following a Bear backcourt violation, Webb made two free throws to extend the advantage to six. He sank two more with 8.9 seconds left to close out the victory.

Bentley was on fire from the start, making 11 of its first 15 shots to take a 28-17 lead a little past the midpoint of the first half. At that juncture, the Falcons had 16 points in the paint and eight assists while Bloomfield had a zero in both those categories.

The offense slowed down over the rest of the half, but Bentley still finished the first 20 minutes with a .600 field goal percentage, 22 points in the paint and most importantly, a 45-31 lead. Nine different players scored for coach Jay Lawson's team in the half with the bench producing 16 points.

The Falcon advantage peaked at 17 early in the second after a Hudson triple and a driving dunk from junior forward Pete Blust (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS).

Bentley was still up 14, 61-47, after a left side three from junior guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon, Mass./Thayer Academy) with 12:31 to play. It would be more than seven-a-half minutes before the visitors scored again and by that time, Bloomfield had put up 15 straight to take a 62-61 lead. Prior to Wright-Kinsey's tying three, the Falcons had scored only six points in more than 12 minutes.

All five Bentley starters scored in doubles with Hudson followed by Webb with 16. Mello-Klein provided 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds, and both Wright-Kinsey and Blust put 10 on the board. Hudson and Blust were the rebound leaders with six apiece.

The bench added 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, with sophomore forward Adria Amabilino Perez (Barcelona, Spain)  leading the way with six.

For Bloomfield, senior guard Safee Abdus-Sabur (Newark, N.J.) scored a game-high 26 and Chapman followed with 16. Senior forward Matt Lajeunesse (Union, N.J.) was a factor in the second-half comeback with ten rebounds, including four offensive, and eight points.

Bentley had the shooting advantage, 50-40 percent overall, and finished with one more three-pointer (9-8) and one more free throw (11-10). Bloomfield controlled the boards in the second half, 23-13, and finished with a 41-34 advantage.

The next action for the Falcons will be Jan. 2 at Saint Rose.
