Bentley Finishes Strong for 73-69 Win over Dominican (N.Y.); Gilpin Matches Career-High with 23

WALTHAM, Mass. – A game-ending run that featured six free throws, including five by junior guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thompson Collegiate), and a pair of key offensive rebounds lifted Bentley University to a 73-69 win over Dominican College (N.Y.) in non-conference men's basketball Friday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Junior forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) led Bentley with 23 points, matching his career-best, and Richmond, despite a rough shooting day, followed with 17 as he moved within 24 of 1,000 for his career.

Bentley, which was playing for the first time since Dec. 12, improved to 7-4 after overcoming a nine-point second-half deficit. Dominican, number eight in the D2SIDA East Region rankings, slipped to 8-4 on the season despite a 31-point effort from sophomore guard Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.).

With his team up one with under six to play, Falcon sophomore forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Williston Northampton School) made a basket, missed a free throw, claimed the offensive rebound and made one of two at the lime. That all came in a span of about 15 seconds and put Bentley in front 65-61 with 4:57 left.

The Chargers answered right back with six unanswered, including four by Rodwell, and held a 69-67 lead after Rodwell made two free throws with 2:03 to play.

Richmond knocked down two from the line ten seconds later and it stayed even at 69 for the next minute until he was fouled again, this time while shooting a three with 51.1 seconds left. He only made the second of the three opportunities, resulting in the game's 16th lead change, but Hudson was able to corral the rebound on the third attempt. Following a missed jumper by Richmond, Bentley earned another offensive rebound, this one by senior forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS).

Richmond was fouled again, with 17.6 on the clock, and this time he made them both for a 72-69 lead. Dominican missed twice from deep in the final ten seconds before Hudson grabbed his ninth rebound. He locked up the win by making one of two free throws with a second left.

Seven of the lead changes came in a first half that ended with the Falcons trailing by only four, 34-30, despite 13 turnovers. The Chargers managed only seven points off those giveaways while Bentley turned DC's six turns into a dozen points.

Dominican maintained the lead after play resumed and pushed its advantage to nine, 51-42, on the strength of six unanswered, including four by Rodwell.

Bentley came right back with a 10-0 run, the first six by Gilpin, and took its first second-half lead on a turn-around jumper in the paint by sophomore guard Seth Stankiewicz (Reading, Pa./ The Hill School) with 12:02 left, 52-51.

There would be six more lead changes in the next 90 seconds before a lay-up by Wheeler made it 60-57 Falcons with 9:43 to play.

Gilpin achieved his 23 by making six of 11 shots overall, three of five from outside the arc and all eight of his free throws. He also pitched in with seven rebounds, three blocks and a steal.

Hudson joined Gilpin and Richmond in doubles, providing 14 points and nine boards in 21 minutes off the bench. Wheeler came close to a double-double, finishing with nine points and the same number of rebounds.

In addition to the 31 from Rodwell, Dominican received 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals from sophomore guard Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.).

Free throws were a big difference with the Falcons finishing 18 of 25 and Dominican 8 of 10. Bentley shot better (43-41 percent) and had the rebound edge (43-38), but 19 turnovers allowed the visitors to take 11 more shots.

Bentley will close out 2017 on the road Sunday, a 2 pm game at the University of Bridgeport.
