Big 2nd Half Carries Dominican Past Bentley, 80-73; Richmond Leads Falcons with 21

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – After trailing by 13 late in the first half, Dominican College (N.Y.) outscored Bentley University 60-40 over the final 22:15 en route to an 80-73 victory in non-conference men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Hennessey Center.

Bentley, which staged a late comeback bid after falling behind by as many as 14, was led by sophomore guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate), the team's only double-figure scorer. He finished with 21 along with a career-high 13 rebounds for his first double-double.

The loss dropped Bentley to 4-2 on the season while the Chargers improved to 5-2.

The Falcons used first-half runs of 14-6 and 15-4 to open a 33-20 lead  with two-and-a-half minutes left in the opening half. The latter spurt included two of Bentley's three first-half threes, both made by Richmond.

After eight unanswered by Dominican, Bentley went into the break up eight, 36-28, following a corner three from sophomore forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy).

Dominican carried the momentum of the 8-3 close to the first half into the second as they outscored the Falcons 20-6 during the first 7:09 after play resumed. That resulted in a 48-42 advantage, one the Chargers would never give up.

Ten unanswered by the home team produced a 64-50 Dominican lead with 4:29 to play. Sophomore forward Travis Cook (Middletown, N.Y.) had four of the ten with two free throws and a dunk.

With Dominican helping by struggling at the line (five misses in the final 80 seconds), Bentley closed to within three, 76-73, on an offensive rebound and two free throws by senior guard Chris Murray (Littleton, Mass./Littleton HS) with 31 seconds left.

Dominican's issues at the line were turned around by six-foot-eight junior forward Gerrel Irvin (Bay Shore, N.Y.) as he made four of four in the final 29 seconds to lock up the win for his team.

Richmond, who made 12 of 14 free throws, was followed in the scoring column by sophomore forward Kyle Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton HS) and senior guard Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./ Cushing Academy), both with eight.

Freshman guard Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.) and junior forward Austin John Huggins (Astoria, N.Y.) led Dominican with 17 and 14 points, respectively.  Irvin, the team's leading scorer for the season (17.5), was limited to nine points, including the game's final four, in 14 foul-plagued minutes.

Bentley was outshot 46-41 percent and limited to only three three-pointers in 14 attempts. The Falcons came in averaging 10.8 triples per game.  The visitors were a plus two on the boards, 41-39, but turned it over 18 times, four more than the Chargers.

Next up for the Falcons is a Wednesday night Northeast-10 encounter at Saint Anselm.
