Bentley Looks to Get Back on Track with Senior Day Game against Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – After suffering back-to-back losses for the first time this season, the Bentley University men's basketball team will look to get back on track Saturday when it returns to the Dana Center for a Senior Day game against Assumption College at 3:30 pm. A free webcast will be available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Despite falling to Southern Connecticut State and Stonehill, Bentley will go into Saturday's game tied for first in the Northeast-10 Conference's Northeast Division, although the standings are closer than they were a week ago. The Falcons (15-5, 12-3 NE-10) are even with Saint Anselm while Stonehill has moved to within a game of the top.

After holding the opponents to 59.0 points on .375 shooting overall and .252 from three in the previous six games (all wins), Bentley has seen Southern Connecticut and Stonehill average 102.5 points (89.5 in regulation). The Owls took an eye-popping 102 shots in their 113-111 2-OT victory and the Skyhawks connected on 55 percent of their threes. Combined, the two teams made 30 3-pointers with a .455 success rate.

Bentley senior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills  HS) has pushed his season scoring average to 22.7, second best in the NE-10, after putting up 28 and 25 points in the last two games. The number three scorer in program history (7 points away from 1900) has shot over .500 in consecutive games for the first time in nearly two months  and continues to lead the conference in free throw percentage (.896).

Graduate student and 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) saw his string of 30-point games halted at three down at Stonehill, but remains the NE-10's fourth leading scorer at 19.5. Since the calendar turned to 2016, he's shot .561 overall, .491 from three and .846 at the line.

Bentley's third double-figure scorer is senior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) at 13.9. He's been one of the NE-10's most accurate from downtown, connecting at a 47.8 percent success rate.

The above three, along with forwards Shakir Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS) and Alex Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic HS), will be recognized prior to the game for their contributions over the last four years. Phelps has been limited to one minute this year due to a knee injury while Mancini has appeared in 32 career games.

The Falcons have been receiving solid play off the bench of late from freshman guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thompson Collegiate). He's averaged 8.4 points over the last five, raising his season production to 6.1 ppg, with only two turnovers in 100 minutes of play.

Assumption will also be looking to snap a slide on Saturday but the Greyhounds' streak is three times as long as the Falcons. They've been outscored by an average of 12 points while dropping their last six and are now 6-14 overall, including 2-13 in the NE-10.

Defensively, the Greyhounds have seen their opponents shoot nearly 51 percent overall and over 42 percent from three while giving up 83 points a game. They've also been outrebounded by 8.6 a game.

Junior guard Declan Soukup leads the team in a number of statistical categories, including scoring (15.1), rebounding (4.1), assists (3.3), free throw percentage (.878) and three-pointers (38). He's one of two Hounds among the top seven most accurate three-point shooters in the conference, a group that also includes classmate Reilly Reid (.484).

The other double-digit scorers for Assumption are sophomore guard Kamali Bey (12.7) and senior forward Tre Owens (10.7).

In the earlier meeting between the two clubs, McFarland, Hyland and Furness combined for 77 points as the Falcons rolled behind 67 percent shooting, 103-86.

Next week, the Falcons will be in New Hampshire twice with games at Southern New Hampshire Wednesday and Franklin Pierce. The SNHU game will be broadcast nationally over NESN+ and NESN National.
