Bentley Looks to Bounce Back from 1st OT Loss in 10 Years Wednesday Night at Stonehill

WALTHAM, Mass. – Four days after coming up just short in a double-overtime shootout with Southern Connecticut State, the Bentley University men's basketball team will return to action when the Falcons visit Stonehill College Wednesday night in the first of seven straight games against Northeast Division teams to finish the regular season.

Game time at Merkert Gymnasium is set for 7:30 pm with a pay-per-view webcast available at www.stonehillskyhawks.tv.

Saturday's 113-111 loss to Southwest Division-leading Southern Connecticut featured 14 ties and ten lead changes before the Owls held on to hand the Falcons their first overtime loss since the 2006 Northeast-10 playoffs.

It snapped a six-game winning streak and dropped the Falcons into a tie for first, with Saint Anselm, in the NE-10's Northeast Division. The Falcons and Hawks begin February with a two-game lead over Stonehill, which will be looking to rebound from a 16-point loss at Saint Rose.

Bentley, 15-4 overall and 12-2 NE-10, will also be looking to rebound from an 87-75 home loss to Stonehill (15-5, 10-4) that started the January portion of the schedule. In that one, the Skyhawks outscored the Falcons 42-26 in the paint and committed only six turnovers to stretch its winning streak in the series to four.

Bentley graduate student and 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) had an outstanding month of January for the Falcons, averaging 24.8 points while shooting .559 overall, .510 from three and .857 at the line. He'll make the trip to Stonehill after putting up 34, 31 and 30 points in his last three games, a stretch in which he's knocked down 15 of 25 three-pointers and also averaged 8.7 rebounds.

The hot stretch has boosted Hyland's season averages of 19.5 points, fourth best in the NE-10, and 8.0 rebounds. One of the few conference players in front of him is teammate Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS), who poured in 28 points in the Southern game.

McFarland is second in the NE-10 in scoring (22.5) as well as first in free throw accuracy (.903) and third in blocks (42). His next basket will make him the fourth player in program history with 700 career field goals, and his 1,868 points ranks third all-time by a Falcon, as well as sixth amongst active Division II players.

In the Southern game, Bentley had three 20-point scorers for the fourth time this season with senior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) completing the trio. He's averaging 14.4 points while ranking third in the NE-10 in both assist-turnover ratio and three-point shooting (.495).

Bentley is the second highest scoring team in the NE-10, averaging 84.1, while Stonehill is the second stingiest, giving up only 70.3 a game. The Skyhawks have won eight in a row at home while holding the opposition to 62.3 points.

Stonehill has four double-figure scorers, a list headed by six-foot-seven Ryan Logan, the NE-10's fifth-leading scorer at 19.4. He had 24 against the Falcons in the earlier meeting while combining with senior guard Carter Smith for 55.

Smith torched the Falcons for 31 points, including 27 in the second half when he shot 9 of 13 with three trifectas and six free throws. The 31 was nearly double the season average of 15.3 for one of the NE-10's top three-point threats (57-124, .460).

The Falcon defense will also have to contend with six-foot-eight senior Pierre Cumpstone and junior forward Jimmy Walsh, who average 12.2 and 10.7 points, respectively.

After taking on the Skyhawks, Bentley will prepare for Saturday's home game against Assumption College.
