Bentley to Play Exhibition Game at Boston College Nov. 5

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University men's basketball coach Jay Lawson will unveil his 2015-16 team on Thursday, Nov. 5 when the Falcons play an exhibition game at Boston College (6 pm, Conte Forum).

Lawson, who's entering his 25th year at the helm, returns a dozen players from last year's 15-12 squad, including four of five starters. That latter group includes two of the top three returning scorers in the Northeast-10, senior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) and grad student Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS). McFarland has earned second-team All-Northeast-10 honors twice and Hyland was a third-team honoree last season.

McFarland, a starter since his arrival on campus in 2012, is the first player in program history to lead the team in scoring and rebounding in three consecutive seasons.  He put up 19.1 points a game last winter and will enter this season with 1,440 points, 18th on the program's all-time scoring list.

Hyland, a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America last year, followed with averages of 19.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists, a combined production level never before achieved by a Bentley player.

The other two returning starters, six-foot-six guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) and six-foot-four forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS), are also seniors. Furness was fourth on the team in scoring (9.3) and Phelps followed at 6.7 per game.

BC, 13-19 overall last year, lost five of the top six scorers from last year's club, including NBA draft pick and ACC leading scorer Olivier Hanlan. The most experienced returnees are seven-foot center Dennis Clifford (6.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and six-five junior forward Garland Owens (3.4 ppg) with the 13-player roster including seven freshmen and one red-shirt freshman.

The Falcons will officially open their season Nov. 13-14 with games against Concordia College (N.Y.) and Caldwell College in the annual Bentley Tip-Off Classic.
