Whenever he heard news reports about famous athletes with careers again derailed by injuries, Keegan Hyland got the kind of sinking feeling in his stomach that comes from identifying with them.

Five years ago, Hyland was an emerging star in Maine.

With 1,110 career points, his spot at South Portland High was secure, and so was a scholarship to Division 1 darling Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., where eventual NBA players Kelly Olynyk and Robert Sacre would be his teammates.
