12-7 Bentley Hosts Pace Saturday in Search of 3rd Straight Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Eight days between games didn't seem to bother the Bentley University men's basketball team who used a season-high 15 three-pointers to shoot past The College of Saint Rose Thursday night, 87-69, out in Albany.

Coach Jay Lawson and his team will have a much shorter turnaround, about a day-and-a-half, before their next contest, Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center against Pace University. The Falcons will be looking for their third straight win, 10th in their last 12 games and 12th in their last 15 with tip-off slated for 3:30 pm.

Bentley, despite the recent success, is still looking to move into the top five in the Northeast-10's Northeast Division. At 12-7 overall and 7-6 NE-10, the Falcons trail fifth-place Franklin Pierce by a half-game and both Stonehill and St. Michael's, who are tied for third, by one. All three appear on the team's February schedule.

Pace has had a difficult season to date with the Setters just 5-16 overall and 1-12 in the Northeast-10. They'll be seeking their first win since upending Stonehill back on Jan. 10 after dropping their last six by an average of 14 points.

In Thursday's win, Bentley received a total of 50 points from senior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and junior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) with the two combining to make 9 of 18 three-pointers. Both finished with 25 points and were also factors on the boards, each claiming eight errant shots.

Following that performance, McFarland is up to fourth in the NE-10 in scoring at 19.5 and Hyland climbed to seventh at 18.9. No other conference team currently has two players ranked in the top seven.

McFarland will enter Saturday's game with an NE-10-best .500 three-point percentage (49-98) and approaching a couple career milestones. He's seven points away from 1,300 points and he needs one block to become the fourth player in program history to reach the century mark. Hyland, who also had seven assists at Saint Rose, now has three games this season with at least 25 points, five assists and five boards.

After shooting 55 percent overall against the Golden Knights, Bentley is second in the conference in accuracy with the season mark at .475. Lawson's team is also first in both three-point shooting (.396) and free throw percentage (.765).

The remainder of Bentley's usual starting lineup includes senior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./ CBA) and juniors Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) and Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS). Koury leads the Falcons in steals (32) while averaging 10.2 points, Furness has helped Bentley to a 10-2 record when he's been available for the full game, and Phelps is coming off a seven-rebound effort.

About two-thirds of Pace's scoring this season has come from three individuals with junior guard Shelton Mickell at the top of the list. He scores 16.7 a game while also averaging 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and one steal.

Six-foot-six Kyle Pearson, also a junior, follows at 15.7, and his 7.1 rebound average is a team best. The only other Setter scoring over five is freshman guard Mike DeMello, who'll come into Saturday at 9.4.

Bentley will also be at home Wednesday for a 7:30 pm encounter with Assumption College.
