Bentley Heads to St. Michael’s Looking for 3rd Win in 7 Days

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference's three most accurate three-point shooters over the opening month of the season will be on the court Saturday afternoon when the Bentley University men's basketball team takes on St. Michael's College at the Ross Sports Center in Colchester, Vt. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 pm with a link to live video at www.bentleyfalcons.com.

St. Michael's seniors James Cambronne and Corey Crawford II top the list, at .667 and .611, respectively, and Bentley junior Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) will enter the game at .567 after draining 13 of 20 over the last four games. Combined, the trio has made a remarkable 41 of 68 from deep.

Bentley, 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the NE-10, will be looking for its third win in seven days, as well as its first road victory in three attempts. The Falcons shot .525 from the field and .849 from the line in wins over Bridgeport and Merrimack in recent days, but have just a .398 field goal percentage away from home thus far.

St. Michael's, 3-2 overall and 2-1 conference, will be attempting to bounce back from a 90-81 Wednesday night loss to Saint Anselm before embarking on a string of eight straight away from home. The Purple Knights lead the NE-10 in three-point accuracy (.469, a percentage better than 11 of the conference's 15 teams have overall), but have cooled off of late (15 of 43, .349, in the last two games).

Rebounding could be a key Saturday with St. Michael's leading the NE-10 with a 6.6 rebound margin and the Falcons 13th at -3.0 despite an 81-70 advantage over the last two games.

On the other hand, Bentley is first in fewest turnovers (even after losing it 20 times in the 86-79 win over Merrimack) and tied for first in getting to the line (17.6 made per game). In contrast, St. Michael's commits 18 turnovers a game and makes just 11.8 free throws, ranking last in the conference in both categories.

Topping the scoring list for the Falcons are McFarland and senior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine), with averages of 19.0 and 17.4, respectively. McFarland, coming off a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double, also leads the team in rebounding (7.1) and blocks (a conference-best 17).  Hyland gave the Falcons 16 points on Wednesday despite having his playing time limited by fouls.

Senior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA), one of only three NE-10 players averaging at least five rebounds, three assists and two steals, scores exactly 10 a game, and sophomore guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)) is coming off a career-high 17 point effort against Merrimack that boosted his average to 9.8.

Junior forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS) and freshman guard Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) have been productive off the bench with Phelps contributing 8.0 points and 4.2 rebounds overall and Wheeler totaling 29 points over the last three contests.

Bentley has not had much of an answer for Cambronne the last couple years. He averaged 20 points and buried eight three-pointers in two Purple Knights wins last season and put up 15 a game two years ago when the Falcons and SMC split the season series.

Cambronne, a six-foot-seven forward, leads the Knights with a 16.0 scoring average and Crawford is right behind him at 15.0. Senior guard and two-time All-Conference honoree Mike Holton, Jr. is also a scoring threat. He's closing in on 1400 career points and is currently at 11.6, about four below his career norm. Sophomore Matt Bonds is the NE-10's premier offensive rebounder (4.0 a game) and second overall in rebounds (9.2 per).

Bentley will also be on the road Tuesday for a non-conference encounter at Molloy College.
