Driving Layup by Charles Gives Holy Family Stunning Win over Bentley, 68-67

WALTHAM, Mass. – A driving lay-up by junior guard Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 1.9 seconds left gave Holy Family University a come-from-behind 68-67 win over Bentley University in the final game of the Bentley Men's Basketball Tip-Off Classic Saturday night at the Dana Center.

The stunning end spoiled a career-best 31-point, 10-rebound performance by Bentley senior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) that included a go-ahead 10-footer with 5.3 seconds left.

Bentley, which led by 11 (54-43) with under nine minutes left, saw that lead vanish during a span of four-and-a-half minutes. With the Falcons managing only two free throws during that span, the Tigers embarked on a turnover-fueled 14-2 run that gave them a 57-56 lead with 4:14 left.

Bentley's second major dry spell of the night ended with 3:02 left when a Hyland three from the left corner ignited an 8-0 run that put the Falcons up seven, 64-57, with 1:14 to play.

Threes by Charles and junior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J.), sandwiched around one of two free throws by senior forward Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), brought Holy Family within two, 65-63, with 29.1 seconds left.

Bentley turned it over twice in the next 11 seconds, the second when Shaw rebounded a Charles miss but was tied up for a jump ball, with the possession arrow belonging to the Tigers. Junior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J.) knocked down a three off the inbound play, giving the Philadelphia school a 66-65 lead with 15.9 seconds.

Hyland answered for Bentley, but the last basket of the night belonged to Charles, who finished with 13 points and had been 0-for-4 from three before making the one with 1:03 left.

Bentley shot well early, hitting six of its first nine shots, and led 17-11 after seven minutes. However, it would be more than nine minutes before the team's next field goal, a stretch in which Holy Family used a 14-4 run to grab a four-point lead. The Falcons warmed up the rest of the half and went into the break up four, 34-30, after Crawford hit a late three-pointer.

In the second half, Bentley used a 16-7 run over a stretch of 6:10 to open the 11-point lead. That flurry was capped by back-to-back threes from the right corner by Hyland and Shaw.

Hyland finished 10 of 15 from the field, including a three-for-six effort from three, and also sank eight of nine free throws.  In addition, he provided three steals and a couple assists.

Junior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) and Shaw followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively, with Shaw coming within one rebound of a double-double. Bentley also received 10 rebounds and nine points (all on free throws) from senior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./ CBA).

Crawford powered Holy Family with 16 points and Wysocky followed with 14.

Bentley outshot the Tigers 42-39 percent but was uncharacteristically outscored from outside the arc. Holy Family buried 13 of 35 while the Falcons were 7 of 20. Rebounds went into the Bentley category, 42-32, and the Falcons dominated the free throws, 20-3.

The Falcons' 20 turnovers included 14 in the second half and came after they lost the ball only ten times in the season's first three halves.

Bentley, 1-1, returns to action Wednesday when it opens the Northeast-10 Conference schedule with a 7:30 pm game at Assumption College.
