Westrol & Tracey Continue to Play & Excel in Europe

The late 2000’s was a special era for Bentley University men’s basketball, with three Elite Eight appearances in a span of four years and a six-year winning percentage of .845. Two of the key reasons for that success, Jason Westrol ’10 and Brian Tracey ’11, have continued their basketball careers as professionals in Europe with both excelling in their respective leagues.

Saint Anselm College’s 14th and 15th points off turnovers, a short jumper by junior guard Roy Mabrey (Belmar, N.J.) off an inbound play with about ten seconds left, reversed a one-point deficit and gave the Hawks a 79-78 win over Bentley University in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships Sunday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym.

From 1986 to 2009, the Bentley University Falcons and the Saint Anselm College Hawks were paired together 15 times during the Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championships. The two programs, each headed by former classmates at the University of New Hampshire (Bentley’s Jay Lawson and Saint Anselm’s Keith Dickson), haven’t seen each other in the conference championships during the last four seasons, but that will change Sunday in Manchester, N.H. when they square off in the 2014 NE-10 quarterfinals. Tip-off at the Stoutenburgh Gym is 3 pm.

Juniors Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) combined for 49 points on 18-of-29 shooting as Bentley University, the fifth seed out of the Northeast Division, ousted The College of Saint Rose, the fourth seed out of the Southwest, by a 93-79 count in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships Friday night at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
