Quick, Harris Each Score 18 as Assumption Snaps Bentley’s Streak at 12, 77-64

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore guard Bobby Harris (Berlin, N.J.) amassed 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals, and sophomore forward Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J.) came off the bench to score 18, as Assumption College handed cold-shooting Bentley University its first Northeast-10 Conference loss of the season, 77-64 in men's college basketball Saturday afternoon at the Laska Gym.

The conference-leading Falcons, ranked 20th in Division II, saw their 12-game winning streak come to an end, but maintained a two-game lead over Saint Anselm, which fell at Saint Rose in overtime, in the NE-10 standings.  The loss left Bentley at 12-3 overall and 10-1 conference while Assumption, 5-2 on its home court, moved closer to .500 at 8-9 (5-6 NE-10).

After falling behind early due to in part to four turnovers in the first five minutes, Bentley used a 15-4 first-half run to open a 19-13 lead after 13 minutes of play. Six different players contributed points, with senior forward Brian Tracey (Bow Mar, Colo./Heritage HS) leading the way with a pair of baskets.

Assumption, after starting the game just 5 of 15 from the field, heated up and used eight straight points, including a pair of threes from freshman reserve Cory Schmidt (Center Valley, Pa.), to reclaim the lead at 21-13.

Following a couple more lead changes, a put-back from sophomore Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Que.) with 3:48 left in the first half put Assumption in front to stay, and the Greyhounds stretched the lead to six by the break, 35-29. The Hounds, after the cold start, finished the opening half at 48 percent after hitting 10 of their final 16 shots (63 percent).

After starting the second half with two Tracey free throws and a basket from senior forward Joe Fremeau (Manchester, N.H./Central HS), Bentley entered a long dry spell with zero points in a span of six-and-a-half minutes. Despite the Falcons scoreless on 15 straight possessions (0-for-10 with five turns), Assumption didn't capitalize quite as much as it could have. The Hounds did pick up eight points, extending their lead to 13 at 46-33.

Bentley got back within seven with 9:34 left, 52-45, but Assumption regained control with a 12-3 spurt that made it a commanding 16-point lead, 64-48, with 5:35 left.  Quick, who had as many threes in five attempts (four) as the Falcons did in 34, connected twice from long range during that run and also made two free throws.

Bentley's .328 field goal percentage was a season-low as was its four three-pointers and .118 accuracy mark from beyond the arc. Those numbers, coupled with 20 turnovers, were too much to overcome against an Assumption team that shot 46 percent and made eight from downtown.

Tracey led Bentley with 15 points and six rebounds, and senior guard Tom Dowling (Rockville Centre,  N.Y./South Side HS) was the only other one in doubles, finishing with 11 points and six boards. Grad student Mike Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville HS) and sophomore Greg Jacques (Brockton/St. Sebastian's HS) both followed with eight.

In addition to the 18 points from both Harris and Quick, Assumption received 14 points and 10 rebounds from senior Mike Baldarelli (Sutton) and 11 points from Rozsnaki.

Bentley is also on the road Wednesday, playing a 7:30 pm game at Adelphi University.
