MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Bentley University field hockey team put up a valiant effort but came up just short in the end, falling in double overtime to Southern New Hampshire, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

Southern New Hampshire, ranked sixth nationally and the number three seed, improved to 16-3 and will host seventh-seeded Saint Thomas Aquinas in a semifinal game Friday. Bentley, which had won five of six, finished its season at 9-10.

Junior Helene Servais (Brussels, Belgium) put the game-winner into the back of the cage 63 seconds into the second extra session, scoring off a drive following the Penmen's third penalty corner in a span of 30 seconds.

Bentley was the first to get on the scoreboard with a successful penalty corner with 93 seconds left in the opening quarter. Senior Tess Anderson (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Reg. HS) inserted the ball to classmate Sam Pavano (Madison, Conn./Daniel HS). She slid it over to junior Sam Simione (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), who drove it past keeper Melanie Rennie for a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Cameron Whelan (Seabrook, N.H.) tallied the equalizer late in the second quarter when her redirect of a shot from sophomore Faye Turkman (Bergen, The Netherlands) trickled across the goal line.

The Bentley defense, including sophomore goalie Kayleigh Vogel (Greenland, N.H./ Portsmouth) and classmate Erin McCool (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan HS), was solid throughout as SNHU controlled play. The Penmen finished with a 27-4 shot advantage and were awarded 12 of the contests' 14 penalty corners.

Vogel finished with 14 saves for the Falcons while Rennie was not credited with any for SNHU.

It was the final collegiate contest for Bentley's ten seniors, eight of whom started Tuesday. They are Anderson, Pavano, Abby Adams (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow HS),Christa Knell (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS), Rachel Crowley (Leicester/Notre Dame Academy), Julia Earley (Howell, N.J./ Howell HS), Keally Ingersoll (Ellicott City, Md,/Marriotts Ridge HS), Janelle Magoon (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry HS), Sarah Rockwood (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) and Ashley Scholten (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield HS).
