No. 9 SNHU Uses 2 1st-Period Goals to Edge Bentley, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – A pair of first-period goals propelled Southern New Hampshire University, the ninth-ranked team in Division II, to a 2-1 win over host Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Wednesday evening.

The Penmen goals were scored by sophomore Cameron Whelan (Seabrook, N.H.) and senior Laura van der Doorn (Beverwilk, The Netherlands). Both followed penalty corners. Whelan netted her second in the sixth minute and van der Doorn's eighth broke a 1-1 tie with 3:59 left in the opening period.

In between, Bentley senior Sam Pavano (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) scored the Falcons' only goal on a drive from deep in the circle. It was her third of the season.

Bentley (4-7, 3-6 NE10) kept pressure on the SNHU defense in the second half, attempting five penalty corners in the third and three more in the second. While the Falcons finished with an 11-7 advantage in that category, only two of the team's 11 shots were on net.

Sophomore Kayleigh Vogel (Greenland, N.H./Portsmouth HS) had five saves for the Falcons and graduate student Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) was credited with one for SNHU (8-3, 5-2).

Bentley is back home Saturday for an 11 am non-conference match-up with Bellarmine.
