Schroder & Virkler Named Bentley Field Hockey Captains

WALTHAM, Mass. – Seniors Rebecca Schroder (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor HS) and Claire Virkler (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa HS) have been named captains of the 2017 Bentley University field hockey team, coach Jessica Spencer announced today.

"Claire and Rebecca understand the team-first mentality and have always been able to relate to their teammates in a positive way," commented Spencer. "Their leadership, along with all of the seniors will keep us focused on reaching our goals in 2017."

Schroder appeared in all 18 games last season while seeing action both as a forward and as a midfielder. She started six times and scored three goals, including an overtime game-winner in a 3-2 victory over Pace. For her career, she's been in 44 games for the Falcons.

"Rebecca has shown she can lead on and off the field by example," said Spencer.

Virkler, who plays defense and midfield for the Falcons, saw action in 11 contests last year and started the season's final four games. During her first three seasons, she's played in a total of 42 games.

"After an early season injury, Claire was a steady presence in the backfield for the team in 2016," said Spencer. "She has great instincts and does a good job communicating with her teammates."

Bentley, which finished last year with a 7-11 record, opens the 2017 season Aug. 31 at Southern New Hampshire.
