No. 8 Adelphi Strikes Late to Best Bentley, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Adelphi University senior Lena Pollich (Massapequa, N.Y.) broke a 1-1 tie with only 33 seconds to play to lift the Panthers, the number eight-ranked team in Division II, to a 2-1 win over host Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action Wednesday afternoon.

Adelphi , with the win, improved to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the NE-10. On the other hand, Bentley dropped to 6-9 overall and 4-5 conference.

Pollich's goal, her seventh of the season and third game-winner, came on a long shot from the top of the arc to complete the AU comeback.

Bentley jumped on top first with sophomore Rachel Crowley (Leicester/Notre Dame Academy) tallying her second of the year eight-and-a-half minutes into the second half, off a pass from freshman Christa Knell (Watertown/Watertown HS).

It stayed 1-0 until the clock was down to 11:39. Junior Samantha Nizich (Nesconset, N.Y.) got the Panthers on the scoreboard with her second goal of 2016, off an assist from freshman Elissa Frein (Carle Place, N.Y.).

Sophomore Jana Mones (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey HS) made eight saves during her first career start for Bentley. That number was matched by Adelphi junior Amanda Gargiulo (Westbury, N.Y.), who won for the 11th time in 14 starts.

Shots favored Adelphi, 13-10, and the Panther s also had the advantage in penalty corners, 8-3.

Next up for the Falcons is a Saturday matinee at Franklin Pierce (1 pm).
