Moore Gives Bentley Double-Overtime Win, 2-1 over Merrimack

WALTHAM, Mass. – On a perfectly-executed penalty corner, junior captain Becca Moore (Belmont/Belmont HS) drove the ball into the cage with 7:54 left in the second overtime to give Bentley University a 2-1 win over Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey at Bentley Tuesday night.

After a Bentley timeout, Moore took the hit on the Falcons' ninth penalty corner of the night. She sent it out to classmate Sally James (Milwaukee, Wisc./Univ. School of Milwaukee) and she returned the ball to Moore for the game-winning shot from left of the cage. It was Moore's fifth goal of the season and her third career game-winner.

Bentley, which was outshot 7-2 in the two overtime periods before netting the game-winner, evened the game with 16:34 left in regulation. Moore also played a role in that one, sending the ball inside the circle to junior Meghan Talerman (Centerville/Barnstable HS), who drove it into the goal from 15 yards out. As was the case with Moore, it was her fifth of the season.

The first half was scoreless until Warrior freshman Taylor Simpson (York, Maine) put the ball into the net with just a half-second remaining, capping a late flurry that saw her team get off three shots  in the final ten seconds.

Junior Katie Kelley (Walpole/Walpole HS) earned the win in goal, making six shots.  She was helped out by sophomore Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J./Madison HS), who recorded her NCAA Division II-leading 14th defensive save of the year in the 41st minute.

Merrimack, which finished with an 18-14 advantage in shots, received eight saves from junior Madison Davis (San Jose, Calif.).

Bentley improved to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference while Merrimack slipped to 8-7 and 4-5. The Falcons will host Southern Connecticut State Saturday at 1 pm in the final home game of the year.
