Bentley Posts Shootout Victory over St. Michael’s, 4-3

WALTHAM, Mass. – After yielding two goals in the final four minutes of regulation, Bentley University outscored visiting St. Michael's College 2-1 in the shootout to prevail 4-3 in non-conference college field hockey action Tuesday night.

During the shootout, junior Sally James (Mequon, Wisc./University School of Milwaukee) and freshman Evan Michaliszyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest HS) were successful for the Falcons and sophomore keeper Evelyn Schaedel (Burlington, Vt./Burlington HS) stopped three of the first four shots she faced.

St. Michael's apparently made their fifth attempt during the shootout to tie it up, but the referees ruled that the Purple Knights' shooters went out of order, creating a violation.

Bentley took a 2-1 lead into halftime when senior Gina Lirange (Auburn/Auburn HS) scored off a penalty corner, her fifth goal of the season, with no time left on the clock. It remained that way until junior Meghan Talerman (Centerville/Barnstable HS) scored her first of 2014, making it a 3-1 game with 9:04 to play.

A little more than five minutes later, that two-goal lead evaporated in a span of 39 seconds. Junior Micaele Heil (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) scored with 3:49 to play, senior Cassaundra Davis (Newburyport) followed with her second of the night and all of a sudden, it was a 3-3 game with 3:10 left.

Both teams threatened in the two overtime sessions. Sophomore Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J./ Madison HS), who assisted on two of Bentley's three goals, had her second defensive save of the night to keep the game going with 8:30 left in the second half, and St. Michael's senior goalie Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree) had seven of her 11 saves during the OT.

Bentley controlled the game statistically, finishing with a 23-12 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in penalty corners. Schaedel was credited with five saves in the victory.

Bentley improved to 3-3 with its second straight win while the Purple Knights, who had a three-game winning streak halted, dropped to 4-3.

Bentley is back at home Friday night when it opens its Northeast-10 schedule with a 7:00 pm encounter with Assumption College.
