#4 West Chester Tops #10 Bentley; Kane Scores 1st Career Goal

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Bentley University freshman Taylor Kane (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS) scored her first career goal early in the first half, but West Chester University blanked the visiting Falcons the rest of the way to record a 3-1 win in season-opening non-conference field hockey Friday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Stadium.

It was a battle of preseason top ten teams as West Chester was fourth in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II coaches' poll and Bentley was tenth.

Kane, who returned to her home state for her collegiate debut, staked the Falcons to a 1-0 lead a little more than 12 minutes into the contest. She lifted it from just inside the top of the circle with the ball just getting in underneath the crossbar.

A little less than three minutes later, West Chester freshman Rachal Toppi (Glassboro, N.J.) evened things up with the first of her two first-half goals. The second came with 10:04 left until intermission, off an assist from sophomore Dayle Paustian (Martinsville, N.J.).

West Chester, which dominated the shots (31-6) and penalty corners (22-2), added an insurance goal 11:38 into the second half with senior Hannah Davies (Mountaintop, Pa.) finding the back of the net.

Junior goalie Katie Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) had a busy afternoon for the Falcons, making 12 saves to tie her career-high. Sophomore Audree Bonavita (Collegeville, Pa.) registered three saves for the Golden Rams.

Bentley is off until next Saturday when it will open its home schedule against American International College (12 noon).
